The most comprehensive record of hominin evolution comes from the fossil record. The oldest fossils attributed to the genus Homo have been dated to 2.5 million years ago, 1.9 million years ago, and 2.2 million years ago in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya, respectively (Tattersall and Schwartz 2007; Mellars 2006; Foley and Martin 2006). Fossils from the H. erectus lineage have been found in Africa, southern Europe, and western Asia (Tattersall and Schwartz 2007; Mellars 2006). The first Homo fossils in northern Asia were found in China and the Russian Far East. By 1.8 million years ago, the first specimens of the H. sapiens lineage had begun to appear in the Old World. Fossils attributed to H. sapiens are now found in Australia and northern Asia (Cheng et al. 2008; Morse et al. 2005; Tattersall and Schwartz 2007). The oldest H. sapiens fossils from the Old World have been found in a cave site in southern China. The record ends in the late Pleistocene with the first H. sapiens fossils from Africa and the Russian Far East (White et al. 2000; Forster et al. 1998).
In this review, we have focused on the evidence for Homo evolution and adaptation in the Old World. However, some of the earliest Homo fossils from Africa, southern Europe, and Asia were later attributed to Homo erectus on the basis of their age and similarities to the H. ergaster fossils from Africa (Tattersall and Schwartz 2007). Thus, the first Homo fossils from the Old World have been the subject of considerable scrutiny. The implications for hominin evolution in the Old World have been considered in a separate review by Henshilwood and Tanner (2007).
Some researchers are more restrictive in their definitions of the Homo genus, and consider fossils to be more similar to H. ergaster than to H. erectus (e.g., Dart 1948; Miossy 1962; Homo 1994; Wood 1999; Wood 2009), or to H. ergaster only (e.g., Delson et al. 2002; Feldmann et al. 2005; McLennan et al. 2005; Stagl et al. 2009; Wood and Collard 1994). Following this scheme, the earliest members of Homo are considered to be the African H. ergaster and the Asian H. erectus.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
