One type of filter is a sedimentation filter. A sedimentation filter is a filter including a porous bed having a porous upper surface and a porous lower surface. The porous bed is formed from a material such as gravel which acts to separate a suspended solid from a fluid stream and which allows the fluid to pass through the porous surface. Sediment collects over time in the bed and creates a structural support that aids in holding the gravel in place. In use, a fluid passes through the porous surface and through the gravel and is filtered by a bed of small particles in the gravel.
One type of sedimentation filter is a cylindrical shell bed which is located in a pressure vessel. The shell bed is typically formed from sand, perlite, pumice or the like. The shell bed operates as a multiple bed filtration structure with a maximum flow rate through a bed of a given size. Multiple size cores, or layers, of the sedimentation filter are formed in the structure. These cores are typically formed through a sleeve inserted into the vessel so that the sleeve forms a part of the bed. However, the pressure vessel normally has a body portion and an end cap. The sleeve may be spaced from the end cap by a flange. The body portion and end cap are joined by welding, brazing, bolting or the like. Accordingly, the shell bed has a hole through it which allows the sleeve to pass through the shell and serve as a core.
In the filter, typically a fluid stream is directed into the vessel through the upper surface of the shell bed. Any solid particulate that separates from the flow stream passes downward along the porous surface of the shell and sediment builds up on the sand or the like.
